of Surgery Louis W. Biegler Chair of Surgery, Evanston Northwestern Healthcare, Evanston, IL Dr. Caprini earned his BS in Biology at Villanova University in Villanova, PA and his MD degree from Hahnemann Medical College (now known as Drexel University College of Medicine) in Philadelphia, PA. He completed his internship in medicine at Evanston Hospital, his residency in general surgery and his fellowship in surgical hematology at Northwestern. Dr. Caprini has spent much of his career educating physicians, nurses and paramedical personnel about the diagnosis and treatment of deep vein thrombosis and problems associated with the aftermath of a blood clot. He has developed a risk assessment protocol used in many hospitals across the country and internationally. He is a member of many national and international professional organizations, including the International Society of Haemostasis and Thrombosis, the European Venous Forum, the International Union of Angiology, and he is president elect of the American Venous Forum. He serves on the National Quality Forum Deep Vein Thrombosis Project of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and is on the editorial board or a reviewer for many journals. He has lectured and published extensively, with more than 1350 lectures and 335 articles, abstracts, monographs and book chapters to date.
